Materials

My materials all have a story - reclaimed wherever possible, often from arts shows where I’ve worked. I choose materials that are sturdy and will last well.

All the bags are different, but here are the stories behind most of the materials I use, a bit about them, and some behind-the-scenes photos of the process involved in reclaiming and upcycling fabric and hardware for Unusual Additions bags.

Fabrics

I use fabric made for the outdoors, a mix of 150D to 1000D denier, nylon and polyester, including Ripstop and Neoprene. They are woven fabrics and made from mostly recycled materials, using a reinforcing technique that makes them more resistant to tearing and ripping. This fabrics are sturdy and made to last, whilst remaining relatively lightweight - perfect for bags that need to carry a lot,

You’ll find a mix of these fabrics in the seafarer’s stuff bags, travel bags and everyday bags.

Tent & tarp

Upcycled tent & tarp in Unusual Additions bags come from show tents and tarps used for promotional banners, signs and truck covers. They’re meant to withstand outdoor conditions so they’re water-repellant, durable and have a satisfying weight to them. These materials hold their shape well when sewn into bags, a bit like a bucket.

You’ll find upcycled tent & tarp featured in our tent & tarp everyday bags.

Found materials

I have fun with found materials, and several of bags feature patterns and textures in everything from striped repurposed window awnings to upcycled show banners with writing. Eyelets, ropes and webbing add to the unique look of each bag. These bags are perfect for people looking for bags with more personality.

Unusual additions labels are individually stitched and made by me from canvas or tarp offcuts.
